Splash into Hualien’s “FUN Summer” at Liyu Lake – 5 Free Water Activities!
(中央社訊息服務20250710 12:50:06)This summer, the Hualien County Government is launching a refreshed and upgraded version of its annual “Hualien FUN Summer” program. Breaking away from the traditional nighttime performances of water shows and concerts, this year’s edition brings the excitement to daylight hours, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural charm of Liyu Lake from morning onward. At the heart of this year’s activities are five brand-new, free water experiences designed to offer a cool, refreshing escape amid stunning lake and mountain views. These hands-on experiences are meant to create joyful memories for families, friends, and couples alike, with a variety of activities tailored for different ages and interests.
Hualien County Mayor Hsu Chen-Wei noted that this year’s lineup includes stand-up paddleboarding for two, stable single pedal boats, laid-back inflatable water scooters, parent-child tandem kayaks, and fun bumper boats. Whether you're a thrill-seeking couple working together on a paddleboard, a beginner enjoying a calm ride on a pedal boat, or a family engaged in a playful water-gun battle aboard a bumper boat, there’s something for everyone. All activities take place within designated safety zones on Liyu Lake, with limited slots available each day. On-site registration is required, and each session lasts 10 minutes. Weekday visitors may find more availability and a better chance to try multiple watercraft options and discover their personal favorites. For those who wish to extend the fun after the free sessions, additional paid options such as swan boats and longer SUP rentals are available from vendors around the lake. These allow guests to explore a wider area of the lake and enjoy a more leisurely summer adventure at their own pace.
Hualien County Tourism Director-General Joshua Yu emphasized the goal of encouraging broader public participation. To that end, visitors who rent swan boats or other watercraft from participating Liyu Lake businesses during the event period will have the opportunity to skip the line and gain priority access to the free water activities. Those unable to secure a spot due to high demand can still join a lucky draw on-site for a chance to win fun summer-themed prizes. Whether or not they take to the water, all visitors will be able to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Liyu Lake and make the most of a relaxing, nature-filled summer getaway.
“Hualien FUN Summer” runs from July 12 through August 10, offering a perfect opportunity for both domestic and international travelers to connect with the healing power of nature in Hualien’s great outdoors. Additional summer highlights include the “Hakka Drum Battle” competition on July 12, the “Cikasuan Water Park Summer Splash” event running from July 12 to August 24, the “Pacific Austronesian Indigenous Joint Harvest Festival” from July 18 to 20, the “Hualien Summer Carnival” from July 23 to 27, and two grand finale “Starlight Concerts”—one held on August 2 at the scenic lawn behind the Fuli Farmers’ Association, and the other on August 23 along the beach beside Qixingtan’s Star Plaza. These events combine music, culture, and stargazing with the natural beauty of Hualien’s mountains and coastline, creating unforgettable summer experiences. With daily flights now operating between Taipei and Hualien, along with four direct flights per week from Hong Kong, Hualien warmly welcomes travelers from across Taiwan and beyond to set out on a sustainable and inspiring journey filled with nature, culture, and creativity.
