German Students Explore Driftwood and Indigenous Crafts, Discovering Hualien’s Abundant Cultural Diversity
(中央社訊息服務20250328 10:58:20)As part of its ongoing efforts to promote international cultural exchange, the Hualien County Government organized a special cultural experience for a delegation from Kehl University (Hochschule für öffentliche Verwaltung Kehl) during their visit from February 18 to 20. The group visited the Bark Art Experience Village to immerse themselves in Taiwan’s indigenous culture and later explored Nanbin Park, where they marveled at the beauty of the Pacific Ocean. The sight of driftwood scattered along the shore piqued their curiosity, especially after discovering that some of the park’s public art installations were crafted from driftwood—including a piece created by Hsu Hsiang-Lan, an artist from the Bark Art Experience Village.
At the experience village, the delegation had the opportunity to make their own paperbark notebooks using traditional techniques derived from indigenous culture. Each step of the process provided a hands-on understanding of this ancient craft, and many students were fascinated by the idea of creating notebooks from natural materials. The activity offered a deeper appreciation of indigenous wisdom and its harmonious relationship with nature. For all 17 members of the delegation, this was their first time engaging with bark craftsmanship and other traditional practices, making it an exciting and memorable experience. The hosts further enriched the visit by offering millet mochi, known as “dulun,” and passion fruit drinks, giving the students a taste of indigenous cuisine.
According to the Hualien County Government, the event not only allowed the German delegation to experience the region’s indigenous heritage firsthand but also showcased the deep cultural roots and wisdom of Taiwan’s indigenous communities. Moving forward, the county government will continue to foster international cultural exchanges, providing visitors from around the world with immersive experiences that highlight Hualien’s rich cultural identity and unique charm.
