NYCU unveils newly designed academic regalia created by Paris Olympics fashion designer Justin Chou

(中央社訊息服務20251231 11:50:41)National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) has unveiled a newly designed set of academic regalia crafted by Justin Chou — founder of fashion label JUST IN XX and designer for Taiwan’s Paris 2024 Olympic delegation. The redesigned doctoral, master’s, and bachelor’s gowns introduce contemporary aesthetics to traditional academic attire, blending modern silhouettes with symbolic visual elements that reflect NYCU’s identity.

Instead of treating the campus simply as a backdrop for graduation photos, NYCU transformed its grounds into a fashion-style photography set, inviting current students to model the new gowns in a visual campaign that brings academic regalia from formal ceremony into a wider and more expressive public imagination.

The debut of the new regalia follows a series of milestones since NYCU’s institutional merger, including the adoption of a unified emblem, visual identity system, and school anthem. Officially presented on Christmas Eve, the gowns will be worn for the first time by the Class of 2026, marking an important life milestone with attire that is both ceremonial and stylish. The design draws inspiration from NYCU’s merged identity and its guiding values — compassion, practical wisdom, integrity, and innovation — expressed through a balance of classical academic form and modern clean lines.

The color palette evokes imagery of blue sky and white clouds, symbolizing openness, exploration, and the freedom of intellectual flight. Chou developed the design starting from the university emblem, integrating the structured proportions of traditional academic dress with a contemporary aesthetic that conveys NYCU’s innovative spirit while preserving the dignity of academic ritual.

Key visual details draw from the gear motif embedded in the emblem, subtly incorporated into the stole and sleeve accents. The gear represents connection and forward momentum — honoring past achievements while pointing toward future breakthroughs. A recurring motif of flight further symbolizes graduates taking wing as they embark on new journeys and challenges.

Designer Justin Chou drew inspiration from NYCU’s post-merger emblem, blending the balanced proportions of classical academic style with clean modern lines to create regalia that preserves ceremonial dignity while expressing the university’s spirit of innovation.

The materials combine premium velvet and satin to create layered visual depth and ceremonial texture. The soft, substantial feel of velvet reflects academic heritage and continuity, while satin’s reflective sheen symbolizes intellect, aspiration, and promise — ensuring the regalia stands out both on camera and in formal commencement settings.

The project also brings together a strong production team, including the apparel manufacturer for the Paris Olympic uniforms and ESG-driven textile company Jenmei Label Weaving, which developed Olympic-grade embroidered emblem patches and commemorative graduation stoles. Production is carried out in collaboration with Ruentex Group, using sustainable functional fabrics with antibacterial, UV-protective, moisture-wicking, and easy-clean properties. All bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral gowns are hand-tailored to balance ceremonial presence with long-term keepsake value.

Chou noted that the design process included extensive dialogue with students, incorporating their expectations and lived experiences into creative decisions. “For many students, the moment they put on the gown is not only the completion of their studies,” he said. “It feels like wearing a blessing — carrying the spirit of NYCU forward as they step into the next chapter of life.”
