This year’s exhibition attracted 4,158 illustrators from around the world, with 317 works selected as finalists. At the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, being shortlisted as a finalist is widely recognized as an international award in itself.

Huang’s selected work, titled Hide and Seek, tells the story of a hen named Little White who quietly slips out of her home while her family is not paying attention.
Huang’s selected work, titled Hide and Seek, tells the story of a hen named Little White who quietly slips out of her home while her family is not paying attention.

After playing outside until dusk, she rushes back toward home—only to wander into a strange and mysterious house along the way. What secrets lie inside the house? And will Little White find her way safely back home?

The series consists of five illustrations, using a visual technique known as figure–ground reversal to create a tense, hide-and-seek-like relationship between Little White and a wolf.

The shadowy image of the wolf gradually shifts from five separate figures into a single form, symbolizing how fear evolves—from scattered and overwhelming to focused and defined. Through this transformation, inner anxiety is turned into a visible and tangible visual experience.

Reflecting on the recognition, Huang said the nomination prompted her to look back on her creative journey. “From my time studying at the Graduate Institute of Applied Arts to continuing my practice after graduation, I have constantly examined myself through my work, and gradually sensed changes in my creative style,” she said.

“In a way, I am the prototype of the hen in this story,” Huang added. “When entering an unfamiliar world, the ‘wolf’ in my imagination—my fear—kept growing larger. But this process was both necessary and precious. I finally learned to face that single, enormous fear directly, rather than repeatedly hiding from it. This has become an essential part of my creative journey.”

The Bologna Children’s Book Fair Illustration Exhibition is widely regarded as a key global platform for emerging and established illustrators, and Huang Yi’s selection highlights the international visibility and creative strength of NYCU’s applied arts alumni.
