Hualien County Government Invites Everyone to Explore Hualien Fishing Harbor on Children’s Day

On the afternoon of the first day of the upcoming Tomb Sweeping Day holiday (April 4), Hualien County Mayor Hsu Chen-Wei invites everyone to the large grassy field at Hualien Fishing Harbor to join the “Hualien Fishing Harbor Children’s Buoy Painting” event. This activity not only introduces participants to Hualien Fishing Harbor and its abundant local fish catch, but also provides an educational experience about sustainable fishing practices through fish consumption. By leveraging the rich imagination of children to paint on buoys, both adults and children can create vivid scenes for their vision of the ocean, aiming to convey the spirit of sustainable fishing and the importance of caring for the ocean.

Hualien County Mayor Hsu Chen-Wei stated that through joint efforts in painting by both adults and children, families are invited to gather at the fishing harbor to enjoy quality time together. The event integrates “children’s fun” and “marine-themed agricultural education,” with activities such as carp streamer painting, painting on buoys recycled from discarded fishing nets, fish consumption education experiences, fishing harbor tours with introductions to common fish species in the county, and DIY pottery painting sessions. The goal is to turn children into little marine experts familiar with Hualien Fishing Harbor and the common fish found in Hualien’s waters. In addition, magic and bubble performances are planned to convey the spirit of sustainable oceans while embracing the joyful atmosphere of Children’s Day.

Chen Shu-Wen, Director-general of the Agriculture Department, said gourmet food stalls will be set up at the event site. Locals who successfully register and participate in carp streamer and buoy painting can earn a $100 festival voucher for the event by posting their artwork on Facebook or Instagram, tagging the Hualien County Government and Hualien Fishing Harbor, and including the hashtag for children’s buoy painting. The offer is limited to the first 60 posts. In addition, visitors who spend over $300 locally or present a whale watching ticket (or proof of purchase) during the Tomb Sweeping holiday period (April 4 - 7) will be entered into a drawing. Prizes include a $50 Festival Gift Certificate and exquisite small gifts, available while supplies last.
