Taiwan Mobile formally joins RE100, commits to use 100% renewables by 2040

By taking part in the initiative, the company is committed to use 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and leads the industry working together to build a sustainable future for Taiwan, and contributes to the global vision of 100% use of renewables.

Countries around the world are working together to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, no one can be exempt from extreme weather conditions. A comprehensive in carbon emissions reduction is the key to climate solution. which is also the responsibility for big enterprises’ around the globe.
Taiwan Mobile is proud to be the pioneer in saving energy and reducing emissions among the country’s telecom operators, and aggressively pursues the use of green electricity in 2017, as part of the company’s efforts to its energy policy transition. In the meantime, the company also takes actions to reduce energy consumption. Moreover, aiming to further enhance the spectrum efficiency and to reduce carbon emissions, Taiwan Mobile decided to acquire Taiwan Star Telecom Corporation in late 2021, and is expected to save 100-200 million kWh of electricity each year. As being Taiwan’s first telecom company to join RE100, Taiwan Mobile marks year 2022 as the starting point of moving forward to Net Zero and commits to work seamlessly with its partners toward this goal.
In order to achieve 100% use of renewable energy by 2040, Taiwan Mobile has adopted a two-track policy: building company-owned power plants and purchasing renewable energy from outside sources. A realistic roadmap to that goal is drawn up by using science-based methods, indicating that 70 % of Taiwan Mobile’s renewable energy need will be met by company-owned generators. It is expected that the percentage of the company’s use of renewables will reach 20% in 2030, 60% in 2035 and finally 100% by 2040. In 2021, Taiwan Mobile began generating green electricity with an installed capacity of 12.46MW and by the end of 2022, with 3.5MW renewable electricity supply from solar photovoltaic, the renewable energy consumption is expected to increase by 24.95 million kWh, about 4.5% of the entire company’s energy consumption, which will reduce carbon emissions by 12,524 metric tons and is expected to have a positive impact on Taiwan’s green energy sector.

RE100 brings together the world’s most influential businesses to drives climate action and promote an zero carbon emission electricity market. The corporations that join the initiative must be committed to 100% green electricity between 2020 and 2050 and to reporting their progress annually. So far more than 300 enterprises around the world have joined RE100 and in Taiwan, 14 companies have become a member, including Taiwan Mobile. Transnational corporate members of the initiative come from various sectors such as high tech (Apple、Google、Facebook、HP), finance (Goldman Sachs、Credit Suisse、Citibank) , food and beverages (Walmart, Coca-Cola、Starbucks), fashion and sportswear (Nike、Burberry、H&M), beauty and skincare (Unilever、P&G、Johnson & Johnson、Estée Lauder、L’OCCITANE Group), etc.
