The Hongshulin metro station began operations in 1997, when Taipei Metro's second line, the Red Line, opened between the Tamsui and Zhongshan stations. Built by a mangrove conservation area, the station was envisioned as a place allowing people in the Greater Taipei area to escape from city life.
Aside from bringing visitors to the town of Tamsui, the metro line also triggered a residential building boom in the area near the Hongshulin and Zhuwei stations, which offered majestic riverside views.
As the last station before the final Red Line stop at Tamsui, the Hongshulin station did not have a high passenger load, averaging 14,000 people entering and exiting the station per day for a decade. But that changed with the launch in December 2018 of the Danhai LRT system, which connects to the Hongshulin station. The new line boosted the station's passenger traffic to 21,000 people per day, making it the station with the biggest traffic growth in the past two years.
Following a soft launch of free services, the Danhai LRT system began commercial operations in February 2019, and has averaged daily ridership of 9,300 people, similar to that of the Kaohsiung Light Rail system.
